“I wanted to have a glass of wine with Martin but I’m told he’s gone. Silly things got said on the bench, it got out of hand and it was unsavoury but it happens. It’s a passionate game but maybe I could have been a bit more grown-up about it. Maybe Sunderland’s bench handled it better. If one or two of us stepped over the line I’ll apologise for it. I’ve never done that before.” – Newcastle boss Alan Pardew.
The Tyne-Wear derby lived up to expectations on Sunday as Newcastle and Sunderland played out a blood-and-thunder match with no less than 9 yellow cards and two reds.
Of course, the likes of Sunderland pair Lee Cattermole and Stephane Sessegnon failed to cover themselves in glory but Newcastle manager Alan Pardew appears to have been the real loser with a crazy over-the-top reaction to winning a penalty with seven minutes to go.
Pardew punched the air a number of times before squaring up to Martin O’Neill – the fact Demba Ba saw his spot kick saved by Simon Mignolet should be a warning not to celebrate before the goal has actually been scored.
Alan Pardew’s celebration at the award of a penalty can be seen here.
Incredibly, Pardew had the cheek post-match to claim “I’ve never done that before,” he may want to click on this video which shows something remarkably similar, when he picked a fight with Arsene Wenger during West Ham’s win over Arsenal in December 2006.
