Spanish side Almeria have been rocked by the news that midfielder Fabian Vargas suffered a fractured fibula and damaged a ligament in his left ankle during Colombia’s 2-nil defeat of Ecaudor on Saturday.
Vargas was injured after finding himself the victim of a terrible challenge by Ecuadorian striker Pablo Palacios, the striker recklessly fouling his opponent and falling awkwardly on Vargas’ standing ankle moments into the second half. Palacios was sent off for his foul.
The 29-year-old, who joined on a free from Boca Juniors during the summer, is now expected to be out for three months after initial fears suggested that the midfielder would need a year on the sidelines to recuperate.
