If you are of the male persuasion, you might want to give this clip a miss. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.
An incident in the Argentina Apertura match between Independiente and Boca Juniors immediately evoked memories of one of the most infamous of all clips in English football.
Ask anyone what comes to mind when they think of former Republic of Ireland and Liverpool defender Phil Babb and it will be when he slammed into the post attempting to stop Pierluigi Casiraghi scoring for Chelsea at Anfield in September 1998.
The “Phil Babb nutcracker” as it became known, saw the defender substituted 14 minutes later and is one of the most famous incidents of the Premier League era.
On Sunday night in Argentina we were treated to a remarkably similar moment and you have to feel sorry for the injuries sustained by Julian Velazquez – at least, as opposed to Babb, he did produce a remarkable goal line clearance.
Already 1-0 up, Boca Juniors striker Pablo Mouche ran through and rounded keeper Fabian Assman. Velazquez pegged it back and managed to divert the ball away from goal but his momentum took him into the most painful collision with the post.
Unsurprisingly, the Independiente defender was substituted due to these injuries.
