Serbian defender Branislav Ivanovic looks set to miss three massive Premier League matches for Chelsea after video evidence captured a sly and vicious punch on Shaun Maloney during the win over Wigan.
Wigan boss Roberto Martinez was already fuming over both Chelsea goals that appeared to be offside, so we can only wonder what the Spaniard will feel when he sees this incident, which according to Martin Lipton of the Daily Mirror who broke the story, came just before Juan Mata’s late winner.
Referee Mike Jones missed the sly off-the-ball punch completely and the FA are set to review the footage which will almost certainly result in a three-match suspension for Ivanovic.
Since the Serb hard man will still play at Fulham tonight, but looks set to miss the FA Cup semi-final with Spurs and Premier League matches against Arsenal and QPR.
It would be no exaggeration to say Ivanovic has been Chelsea’s best defender in 2011/2012 and not for his recent knack of scoring crucial goals.
