Spanish daily El Confidencial have pulled no punches today, as they have gone on the attack against Leo Messi’s record from the penalty spot.
Messi dominated attention as Barca beat Levante 4-1 on Sunday night, as the Argentine superstar missed a penalty while scoring a brace and laying on an assist.
In total, Messi has taken 81 penalties in his professional career (club and country, including shootouts), and he has missed 17 spot kicks (21%). That’s a lot.
El Confidencial have now asked the big question: is it time for Messi to replaced from taking penalties for Barcelona?
The news outlet say yes, but they claim that no one at the Camp Nou would “dare” to break the news to Messi.
El Confidencial note that Messi has been taking spot-kicks since the days of Pep Guardiola and “nothing has changed… [because] no one will cough”. They go on to call Messi “human” from the spot.
In a straight-talking sentence it’s argued “the debate is not whether the Argentine is infallible from the penalty spot, that’s obvious.”
Finally, it’s noted that there is no indication that Messi will be removed from penalty duty anytime soon.
