Roma attacking midfielder Erik Lamela looks set for a suspension after committing that most heinous of crimes in football: spitting on an opposition player.
With Roma 4-0 down and Juventus cruising to a win that would send them three points clear in Serie A, Lichtsteiner decided to take it upon himself to let Lamela know the scoreline by holding up four fingers.
Former River Plate midfielder Lamela didn’t take too kindly and promptly let fly with some of his spittle that was only picked up by TV cameras and completely missed by the officials.
From a historical perspective, the Lichtsteiner four-finger jibe has been seen as “revenge” for a similar jibe meted out by Francesco Totti in a previous Juventus-Roma encounter.
