Reading 4 – Crystal Palace 2 (Championship, August 30, 2008) James Harper had given the Royals a deserved lead on 17 minutes before giving away a penalty when he handled Nick Carle’s shot. The Australian duly converted to score Palace’s first goal of the season, and they took a shock lead through Tom Soares after the break. The Royals were level within two minutes when Doyle was the only one to react to Hunt’s corner, and in front when Doyle stabbed in his second three minutes later. Doyle completed his hattrick with a 90th-minute header.
Preston 2 – Charlton 1 (Championship, August 30, 2008) Preston fell behind after Andy Gray scored for Charlton from the penalty spot on 19 minutes, but second-half goals from Neil Mellor and Barry Nicholson earned them the three points.
Norwich 1 – Birmingham 1 (Championship, August 30, 2008) Sebastian Larsson scored against the run of play to give Birmingham the lead at half-time, but Darel Russell struck straight after the break to deny the visiting team a fourth league win in a row.
Doncaster 1 – Coventry 0 (Championship, August 30, 2008) Coventry City slipped to their third defeat in seven days, Richie Wellens produced a moment of magic with a sumptuous 25-yard drive after 31 minutes.
Burnley 0 – Plymouth 0 (Championship, August 30, 2008) In a match-up between two sides looking for their first wins of the season, the majot talking point was the sending off of Chris Eagles for Burnley.
Barnsley 2 – Derby 0 (Championship, August 30, 2008) Derby remain winless in 28 long matches, Hume and Foster scoring second half goals for the Tykes.
Braga 0 – Sporting Lisbon 1 (Superliga, September 1, 2008) Helder Postiga clinched the victory for Sporting, tapping home a cross from the right by defender Abel after just four minutes. Braga played the last seven minutes with 10 men after defender Joao Pereira was sent-off for a foul on Sporting captain Joao Moutinho.
