British non-league striking legend Rocky Baptiste will likely be propelled into a worldwide, household name this week after the Harrow Borough centre-forward conspired to miss one of the greatest misses of all time during last weekend’s match with Waltham Abbey.
The incident arose after Baptiste , latching onto a failed headed back-pass from the visitor’s centre-half, raced through on goal for Harrow in the opening 45. Composed and assured, the number 10 rounded the visitors’ keeper, leaving him with the all-too-simply job of tapping the ball into the gaping, empty net from about yard out.
What happened next beggared belief.
With a Waltham Abbey defender trying his damnedest to close down the striker, Baptiste let rip with his shot only to see his effort skew wide of the far post. How Baptiste, a striker who scored 70 goals in 108 appearances for Havant & Waterlooville, missed was simply breathtaking.
The truth is the miss mattered little in the end, as not only did Harrow run out 5-3 winners, but Baptiste also made up for error in the second half with an unbelievable strike, thumping a wonderful 35-yarder half-volley over the keeper and into the net.
Both Baptiste’s horror miss and fantastic strike can be seen here.
The other main entrants for the miss of the season is Dinamo Zagreb’s centre-forward Ilija Sivonjic.
