Memphis Depay says Louis van Gaal ‘convinced’ him to reject Bayern Munich to join Man United [Bild]

German newspaper Bild have published a new interview with Memphis Depay in their new edition (see above), and in the article the Dutch international reveals that he turned down Bayern Munich to move to Manchester United.

According to Depay, whilst he was loathed to make any judgment call on the management qualities of Pep Guardiola, he candidly admitted that Louis van Gaal was a key component in his move to Manchester United.

The trust of the Bild article, as translated by the Guardian, are the following quotes from Depay:

There were discussions with nearly all the top clubs. Bayern were one of them, but in the end Manchester United came out on top.

I can’t say who the best coach in the world is. There are definitely a lot of good and well-known managers and Pep Guardiola is certainly one of them.

But I only spoke to Louis van Gaal and he totally convinced me. He gave me the feeling that I was very important for him. Not only as a player but also as a person – and then it was clear that I would go to Manchester United.

Those quotes will be music to the ears of Red Devils’ supporters.

Man United paid Dutch champions PSV £25m for Depay at the start of the summer. He has since been joined by Matteo Darmian, Morgan Schneiderlin and Bastian Schweinsteiger at United.

Man United are currently in America for their pre-season tour. They take on Club America, San Jose Earthquakes and Barcelona in the International Champions Cup.
