What is it with friendlies turning nasty these days?
Just days after a Colombian warm-up match between Sante Fe and Bogata was called off after just three minutes, another exhibition game between Raja Casablanca and KAC Marrakech was abandoned long before the final whistle was supposed to be heard.
Playing in the Challenge Cup on Sunday in Morocco, Raja broke the deadlock in the 41st minute and that proved the spark for craziness to break out in the stands.
After the halftime whistle had blown, and with the players still out on the field, tens of fans began streaming the pitch in a completely unorganised fashion.
Quickly it became apparent that the sprinkling of stewards and police were helpless to stop the fans milling around on the playing surface, and that only served to encourage more fans – mainly children – to give up their seats in the bleachers and make their way onto the grass.
Like a plague of locusts, suddenly dozens of supporters were buzzing around on the pitch. And then, as if they had been sprayed with pesticide, the fans quickly dispersed back to where they came from.
Aside from the hullabaloo on the pitch, mayhem also broke out in the stands. With the fans of Raja and KACM seemingly penned in together, seats were hurled between the factions while a series of punches were also caught on camera.
After witnessing the crowd get out of control it was decided to end the match after just 45 minutes.
