So the Spanish league title will go to the wire but, depressingly for Real Madrid, Barcelona are in full control.
Barcelona moved to within a whisker of a second straight La Liga title with a jittery 3-2 win at 10-man Sevilla on Saturday night, while Real Madrid kept their dreams alive by thumping Athletic Bilbao 5-2 at the Bernabeu. The results mean that should Barcelona win at home to lowly Real Valladolid next weekend, then once again Pep Guardiola’s charges will be crowned champions.
Although Real will likely end the season as runner-up, Cristiano Ronaldo is undoubtedly a winner who deserves better. Against Bilbao C-Ron was again the leader for Los Blancos. He opened the scoring from the spot, however the rest of the night the former Manchester United forward’s shooting was slightly more wayward.
Other than a few rasping long range attempts, Ronaldo didn’t have too many other clear-cut chances to bag more goals. But that failed to stop Ronaldo drifting all over the pitch and causing the Bilbao backline problems all over the final third. And, as is customary, Ronaldo took every opportunity to showboat, dazzling the home fans with his backheels and his dribbling.

But whatever Ronaldo can do, Barcelona’s Lionel Messi usually matches. The diminutive Argentine also found himself on the scoresheet on Saturday night, as the world’s best player broke the deadlock after only five minutes with a brilliant goal that showed off his amazing control and shooting ability.
Surprisingly Messi failed to double his tally in the 37th minute when, from a Dani Alves cross, the forward missed a guilt-edged opportunity from only four yards out.
All in all though it was another exemplary night for Messi who showed off a wide array of skills, passes and close-control ability.
