He’s not called “Mad” Jens Lehmann for nothing. The 40-year-old goalie had another entertaining night in the Champions League against Barcelona with a typical barmy performance.
Lehmann’s evening started with luck on his side as he only partially stopped a Leo Messi strike only to see the ball trickle goalwards and strike the post. An inch the other way and the Catalans would have scored, but as it turned out the former Arsenal keeper was able to pounce on the ball at the second attempt and snuff out the danger.
Then, early in the second half Lehmann’s luck ran out. After making a brilliant save to smother Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s initial shot in the 54th minute, the ball rebounded to the Swede who scored Barca’s sole goal of the night.
Stuttgart’s night could easily have worsened soon after. Lehmann narrowly avoided humiliation when he stormed out of his goal to try and catch a Xavi corner, he missed the ball completely, and only the inability of the match officials to see defender Molinaro save Zlatan’s shot on the goalline with his arm allowed Lehmann to get away with his awful decision making from the set-play.
Rounding off the night, Lehmann also took out a photographer when shepherding a ball over the byeline, and the loony keeper was also fortunate to escape a booking when he nearly took Puyol’s head off with a silly flying kick.
