The Africa Cup of Nations always seems to highlight the paucity of high quality goalkeepers on display and the last quarter-final was decided by a shocking gaffe by Aymen Mathlouthi.
In truth, the 2012 version of the tournament has not served up quite as many keeper mistakes as previous versions with the error by Zambia’s Kennedy Mweene the previous lowlight.
Ghana secured their quarter-final win over Tunisia in extra-time but the winning goal from Andre Ayew was almost exclusively down to a poor catch from Tunisia’s Aymen Mathlouthi.
With 101 minutes on the clock, a right wing cross was lofted to the back post where the Tunisia keeper was all alone to take an easy catch.
Somehow, the 27-year-old Etoile Sahel keeper botched the simple take and chested the ball out to Dede Ayew to win the match.
