Paulo Bento’s decision to even include Nani in his World Cup squad, let alone start him, was met with derision in some Portuguese quarters.
The Manchester United winger is answering those critics emphatically, with a couple of brilliant displays in Portugal’s World Cup warm-up games.
Against Ireland last night, Nani stole the show, with a lovely (disallowed goal) and two delicious assists.
The first, for Vieirinha, wasn’t so much about the final pass, but more about the control in receiving a 50-yard ball: Nani took it down with a velvet touch, picking it out of the air with incredible nonchalance, without even breaking stride.
From there, he waited for the cavalry to arrive, and laid a cross on a plate for Vieirinha to score the 4th.
