The Daily Mail reports that Manchester City are interested in acquiring Inter Milan’s 33-year-old Colombian centre half Ivan Cordoba.
Cordoba was previously named by Jose Mourinho as an “untouchable†however, the two have recently fallen out leading to reports that the Colombian is being touted around a variety of interested clubs. It is believed that the center half favours a reunion with his old boss Mancini at the Eastlands.
The City are in the market for defenders makes sense. So far this season the Citizens backline has conceded a whopping 27 goals, and new boss Mancini has made it his top priority to shore up his back line. With criticism of Toure and Lescott increasing it is not surprising that Mancini is looking to purchase a reliable defender.
Cordoba made his name playing for San Lorenzo in Argentina where in two seasons he made 57 appearances scoring 7 goals. With both Inter Milan and Real Madrid willing to match his 16 million Euro fee, he chose to join the Nerazzurri. Since joining in 1999, he has been a favourite with both his managers and fans, chalking up 285 appearances and scoring 15 goals in the process.
If Manchester City successfully complete his transfer, they will get a classic South American defender who is built like a tank and rarely subtle in his dealings with opposition forwards.
Cordoba stands at 5 ft 8 inches so it is unsurprising that his greatest weapon is his speed (he’s consistently rated one of the fastest players in Serie A). Much like Roberto Ayala, his excellent footballing brain and a sharp positional sense make up for his lack of height. This enables him to snuff out a potential situation with the minimum of fuss. He has also developed a happy knack of turning up at the other end of the pitch to head in late goals from corners.
Cordoba’s defensive versatility means that he is capable of playing across the back four and makes him an attractive proposition for the Citizens. Mancini is currently without injured pair Wayne Bridge and Joleon Lescott and will lose captain Kolo Toure to the Africa Cup of Nations after this evening’s visit to Wolves.
The Colombian has consistently been one of the top defenders in Serie A since his arrival in Italy. The bond between former manager and player is strong, so we expect this transfer to occur in January if a transfer fee can be agreed between Manchester City and Inter Milan.
