A former Manchester United scout has said that Memphis Depay is a more complete player than Cristiano Ronaldo was when he was the Dutch international’s age.
Ed van Stijn went on record last week when saying that the PSV attacker has developed quicker than Ronaldo did.
The key difference between the two to van Stijn was how Depay utilises his ability more than a 21-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo did.
He said: “You can’t judge Depay on his technique.
“With him you look at what he’s doing with that technique to utilise it as much as possible.
“For example, look how often he makes sure he finds himself in one-on-ones facing the goal. It all comes down to details.
“If you compare him to a young Cristiano Ronaldo at the same age, then Depay has more strings to his bow. I like him better.
“Ronaldo made many of the same mistakes at Manchester United as he did when he was 17.”
PSV manager Philip Cocu has also compared Depay to Bayern Munich winger Arjen Robben.
To be fair to Ronaldo, he had his first standout season for United when he was only 21. In United’s title-winning 2006/07 campaign, he scored 23 goals in all competitions.
That was the first of NINE consecutive seasons in which he scored more than twenty goals.
Depay is the top scorer in the Eredivisie but he still has a long way to go before he matches the Real Madrid attacker.
