Reports via German newspaper Bild today suggest Liverpool are preparing a pre-contract offer for Barcelona right back Martin Montoya.
The 22-year-old is out of contract at Barcelona and struggled for playing time this season under new boss Gerardo Martino.
Alongside Liverpool, the likes of Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen are also chasing Montoya, who could well be a bargain on a free transfer.
Unsubstantiated quotes from Montoya’s agent are doing the rounds suggesting Liverpool are “ahead of the pack” to sign the Spaniard.
Although hugely talented and schooled in Barcelona’s famed La Masia system, it is questionable whether Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers would be on the market for a right back.
The likes of Glen Johnson, Andre Wisdom and Martin Kelly can play right back for Liverpool and Rodgers has recently utilised Jordan Henderson in a right wing-back role.
