Liverpool have made a bid for Thomas Vermaelen, Sport claim in a highly surprising transfer report this afternoon.
The Catalan paper claim that the Reds have lodged a formal bid with Barcelona with a view to securing the Belgian’s services.
Former Arsenal man Vermaelen has barely featured for Barcelona since signing in the summer of 2014; he has made just 11 La Liga appearances.
Such a low number of games owes much to his injury woes, which saw him sidelined essentially for his entire first season.
But even now that he is fully fit, his situation hasn’t improved much, and he remains firmly on the fringes, with Mathieu the first sub defender, behind first-choice Mascherano and Pique.
With Mamadou Sakho set to be banned for failing a drugs test, Liverpool are in the market for a centre-half, but it’s doubtful Reds fans will be too enamored with this link.
