Although Newcastle head to the Heart with a three-place advantage in the Australian top-flight table, the Jets are actually trailing their hosts in the form guide having one picked up just one win and five defeats in their last six matches.
Newcastle’s woes increase when their awful record is dissected further, as during that period the Jets have scored just four times while shipping 14 goals.
Melbourne Heart fair only slightly better having notched one win, two draws and three defeats in their last six games. Moreover, the Heart have scored seven and conceded 10 in that period.
Somewhat fittingly, both Newcastle and Melbourne arrive to the New Year’s day fixture having suffered 3-2 defeats in their last matches respectively. The Hearts defeat came after they went 2-up at the Wellington Phoenix, while Emile Heskey had brought the Jets level 2-2 with the Melbourne Victory before they also slumped to defeat.
