L’Equipe: QPR ready to bid €8m for Yann M’Vila but Rennes want more
For well over 12 months now Yann M’Vila has been linked with a move to the Premier League. But is the French international midfielder heading for Loftus Road?
Over the course of the past season M’Vila’s stock has rapidly plummeted after a series of off the field problems, injuries and a failure to break into the French starting XI at Euro 2012.
The headline disciplinary problem came when M’Vila went to a nightclub before a France U21 game, the French Football Federarion decided to ban him from representing his country until 2014.
Yet taking all these problems into consideration, at just 22, M’Vila still has everything to succeed in English football. At 6.0ft tall, well built and known for being a dogged holding midfielder, he should adjust with no problem to the Premier League.
Despite his undoubted physical abilities, it is M’Vila’s passing which could be his best assest. In March 2010 he set a new record for France notching a 92.5 pass completion rate against Luxembourg, and he also claimed the Ligue 1 record in 2010/2011 against Valenciennes.
M’Vila may not have score many goals, but has the physical attributes and passing skills to be one of the top midfielders in Europe. The big question-mark against the midfielder is whether his attitude will end up torpedoing his potentially huge career.
QPR are just one of many clubs linked with the Rennes midfielder. According to the rumour mill, M’Vila’s agent is making contact with a variety of clubs including Zenit St Petersburg to see who wants his client. Clearly M’Vila’s agent wishes to start a bidding war for his client amid reports that QPR are willing to pay just €8m for the player.
Yet what seems certain is that Rennes want to sell their star man. Rennes owner Federic Antonetti admitted this weekend “I want to keep him, but if Rennes were to receive a suitable bid then he would leave. He is better and more mature, and will go. It is part of the club’s policy that he will leave if he has to, only, who will replace him?”
One final point.
Even if QPR could sign M’Vila, do the Super Hoops really need another midfielder? Already with a stockpile of talent including Granero, Taarabt, Park, Derry and MBia, one has to question how wise it would be to add another centre-mid to the mix.
