Barcelona and Real Madrid’s dominance of La Liga is such, that were you to take away all of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo’s goals this season, they would still be in the top two.
However, there would be a change at the top with Barcelona taking a one point lead over the side from the Spanish capital.
As it stands in La Liga, Real Madrid are two points clear of Barcelona but the lead established by Carlo Ancelotti’s side has been slowly eroded in recent weeks.
Explanation for how the table was worked out is given as follows: “I went through every La Liga result and subtracted the goals scored by Messi and Ronaldo, altering the resulting final score. So, for example, if it weren’t for the 4 goals Ronaldo scored against Elche in 5th round, the game would’ve ended 1-1. This way, Real would lose 2 points and Elche would gain 1.
Obviously, I’m not trying to prove who the best player is or anything like that. Basically, I did this avoid other, more important things that I should be doing.”
Does this make much difference to the Cristiano Ronaldo-Lionel Messi debate?
Arguably, it simply proves that this season Real Madrid have been a bit more reliant on goals from Ronaldo than Barcelona with Messi.
But, that could change by the seasons end and yet again it seems this table proves just how lucky we are to see two such brilliant players slug it out for two of the best teams on the planet.
