“I’m a fan, really. I don’t feel like Kobe the basketball player at all. I’m just as excited as anybody here. Watching her play, the way that she plays with such passion, such energy, such a love for the game, and so much creativity, I found myself being glued to the TV set. There were three things I wanted to accomplish last summer when I was in Beijing. One was to win a gold medal. Two was to watch Michael Phelps make history. The third was to watch Marta play in person. I was fortunate enough to accomplish all three. I’m beyond excited that she’s here.” – Kobe Bryant.
With all the commotion surrounding David Beckham’s future, the Los Angeles soccer-loving community had another reason to be cheerful this week as the latest world superstar jetted into the City of Angles.
On Thursday afternoon the female Footballer of the Year, Brazil’s Marta, was introduced by the Los Angeles Sol and the biggest name in US basketball, Kobe Bryant, marked the occasion by flying in by helicopter after his Lakers practice to make acquaintance with one of his soccer idols. And the two got their footy-groove on as they battled it out in a penalty shoot-out.
Ladies’ first, Bryant took his position between the sticks as he faced a Marta spot-kick, and much to the joy of the surrounding crowd the Brazilian managed to hit the upright with her effort. When the roles where reversed Kobe showed off his well-documented football skills with a sweet-shot into the top left-hand corner.
