Keeper Fernando Henrique gives away a penalty, but then wins one at the other end
- February 15, 2009
Week in, week out, we bring you stories highlighting violence at football matches. And every-so-often we are also able to bring footage of a goalkeeper who managed to score or set up goals. Happily, one match last week in Brazil had it all.
Fluminense keeper Fernando Henrique took centre stage during last week’s Carioca 1 match, with the shot-stopper conceding a penalty after dishing out a violent punch in his box, only for the keeper to redeem himself by winning a last minute penalty to earn his side a last-gasp win.
The match started on a bright note for Fluminense as Hamburg loanee Thiago Neves scored a superb free-kick to give his side the lead at halftime.
Heading into the final 10 minutes Flu had managed to hold onto their lead, but then everything appeared to crumble when Fernando Henrique had a moment of madness when he slogged an opponent in his crown jewels. How Henrique was not sent off for his violent punch remains a mystery, but his side were punished as Eberson levelled from the spot.
Amazingly though, in the final minute of the match Henrique then managed to repay his side when he won a stonewall penalty of his own. Flu won a late corner and the keeper came up from the back to try and mix it up in the box. The ball ran loose to Henrique on the edge of the box and the he motioned to keep the attack alive with a header. But as Henrique jumped he was kicked in the stomach by Americano’s number 6 and the ref wasted no-time in blowing his whistle. Dario Conca stepped up and scored the injury time winner.
