It is every manger’s worst fear when they release their squad for international duty.
Jose Mourinho has been left to sweat until more news is available over Maicon’s thigh injury suffered during Brazil’s World Cup qualifier in Ecuador on Sunday night.
The injury had all the hallmarks of a serious blow. After just 24 minutes of play in Quito, Maicon was found charging up the right hand touchline before delivering a trademark right-footed cross, only for the Nerazzurri wing-back to be struck down in agony after pulling up with an injury. Maicon seemed to have strained a muscle while attempting a cross from the right wing.
So bad was the pain at the time of impact that Maicon was forced off the pitch on a stretcher before being replaced by Barcelona’s Dani Alves.
As of the time of writing, Inter wait on tenterhooks to find out the severity of the injury. The news will come as a blow to the Special One who is looking to steer Inter to a third back-to-back Serie A title with his side currently seven points clear of Juventus (the pair are set to meet on April 18) with just nine games to go.
