With Arsenal fans swinging from chandeliers this Thursday having taken top spot in the Premier League for the first time in two years, we are happy to bring you a lively discussion from last weekend’s Soccer Saturday show in which the panel discussed whether the signing of Sol Campbell made sense for the Gunners.
Jeff Stelling asked ex-Arsenal man Paul Merson for his thoughts on the signing, with Merse confusingly stating he “was shocked, but not surprised” over Sol’s transfer, with the talking head arguing that Arsene Wenger “ain’t a big spender… but its very rare that [Wenger] signs a lemon.”
Next, Phil Thompson also threw his weight behind the deal, with the Scouser arguing that Campbell is an “ideal” signing as cover for the Wenger Boys. Thommo did however raise his reservation though that “I’d be worried if I had to play him every week.”
That opened the door wide for Jeff to pose the obvious question, but what “if one of the central defenders picks up an injury or a ban?… Isn’t it a backwards step? Shouldn’t Arsene Wenger be looking to the future?… [Campbell] couldn’t even get a game a Notts County!”
The lively discussion, including short clips of Campbell’s performance for Arsenal reserves against West Ham last week, can be seen here.
