Is Falcao no longer coming? The Mirror say Chelsea are close to £12m David Villa buy
- Updated: December 25, 2012
The Mirror’s back page on Boxing Day is full of transfer gossip.
A week before the January transfer window opens, Chelsea are now being linked to a £12m bid for Barcelona’s David Villa.
According to the Mirror, under the headline ‘Rafa swoops to grap £12m Barca’s Villa’:
Chelsea are ready to gazump Arsenal and Liverpool to snatch Barcelona’s David Villa. The World Cup winner has become a Nou Camp outsider after his leg break last winter, making just a handful of first team starts for the Liga leaders.
This is far from the first time Villa has been linked with a Premier League move.
Last Tuesday Spanish paper AS splashed with the transfer story that Arsenal were close to snapping up Villa, while the general narrative around Villa seems to be the Spanish all-time leading scorer no longer fit into the plans of Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova and the player is reportedly keen to try the delights of the Premier League.
A couple of points on the Mirror’s transfer story.
By linking Chelsea to David Villa, one begins to question whether Radamel Falcao will ever arrive at Stamford Bridge.
Falcao, arguably the best centre-forward in world football, is set to leave Atletico Madrid sooner rather than later, but it now seems that the Blues consider £12m for Villa to be far more attractive investment than the reported £50m fee which the Colombian commands.
Moreover, however you cut it, it now seems that David Villa’s days in Catalonia are up. The constant chatter linking the forward with a move to England feels too loud to be complete garbage, and surely Villa would be a major assest to Chelsea or which Premier League club can snatch him up.
In 12 appearances for Barcelona this season Villa has five goals.
