Real Madrid chalked up yet another pre-season win on Monday night bowling over Rosenborg 4-nil, yet the night ended in relative disappointment for Cristiano Ronaldo as the world’s most expensive player failed to dazzle to the extent demanded for an £80 million footballer.
Looking to fend off criticism of Ronaldo, Los Blancos coach Manuel Pellegrini made special mention of CR9 in his post match press conference.
Pellegrini: “In pre-season there has been a lot of hard work and Cristiano has had to cope with many changes – a new country, a new league – and that takes time to adapt. I think he’ll be in good form for the start of La Liga.”
Against Rosenborg, Ronaldo was once again handed the specific role of playing down the left-hand side, althought the forward was regularly found popping up in more central, and even wide-right areas, as he looked to affect the play.
Although Ronaldo showed some trademark fancy footwork, all too often CR9 was found to be touching the ball in relative safe-zones for the Norwegians as Rosenborg consistently managed to double up on the Portuguese star. On the few occasions in the first half where Ronaldo found some space, the World Football of the Year always looked to head straight for goal, although his efforts were sadly not up to his high standards.
After the break Ronaldo had two attempts to shine from set-plays. His first effort forced a top save from the Rosenborg keeper, while his second attempt ended up high, wide and handsome.
