This was the performance that Ronaldo, Manuel Pellegrini and the Real Madrid fans have been waiting for. Ronaldo put in his best performance of the season to-date at FC Zurich on Tuesday night, yet if truth be told there is still much room for improvement for the world’s most expensive footballer.
No longer a right winger since his days at Manchester United, Ronaldo continued to be deployed down Real’s left hand with Royston Drente supporting CR9 from his position at left-back.
Early doors Ronaldo’s neat touches were punished with a couple of crude challenges from the Swiss outfit. This presented the Portuguese forward with a free-kick opportunity in the 24th minute which he hit high, wide and handsome. But two minutes later, when a second opportunity came around, Ronaldo’s effort was picture-perfect as he smashed a trademark dead-ball past a helpless Zurich keeper Johnny Leoni.
With his confidence visibly sky high Ronaldo closed out the remainder of the opening forty-five with a series of cute flicks and sensible passes, however an impressive performance before the break tailed off in the second half as Ronaldo’s impact on the match lessened, being replaced by some trademark unnecessary showboats.
That said, the second half did bring Ronaldo his second goal of the night in the 89th minute as Cristiano saw his 30-yard free-kick slip through the hands of Leoni to take his tally for Real to four goals in three competitive games.
