Last weekend in Spain saw reigning champions Real Madrid collect their maiden win of the La Liga season as they beat Granada 3-0, and Jose Mourinho handed a league debut to Luka Modric in the Los Blancos midfield.
The Croat, who moved from Tottenham after a lengthy negotiation over the summer, received a cameo appearance in Los Blancos’ Spanish Super Cup victory over Barcelona last Wednesday, but against Granada he made the starting eleven for Real.
Replacing Mesut Ozil as the creative cog of Madrid midfield, Modric shone from the outset with some incisive and crisp passing in the centre of the pitch.
As the match progressed however, Modric’s impact began to wane as he lack of match fitness became apparent. The Real number 19 slowly drifted to the periphery of proceedings as his eagerness to get on the ball seemed to desert him.
