Lionel Messi may not have had a vintage performance against Athletic Bilbao, but the Argentine pocket-dynamo still put in an effective performance this weekend.
As we have come to expect, Messi showed touches of genius and created a host of chances for his teammates after netting a penalty to increase his goal tally to a whopping 23 already this season. Messi also had to ride a series of hefty tackles from the opposition throughout the night.

Coventry’s Marcus Hall worked his socks off against Chelsea on Saturday. During the first half the Sky Blues’ left back was left without any cover in front of him, Chris Coleman refusing to play an orthodox left-sided midfielder, and Jose Bosingwa exploited the free space down the right hand side.
In the second half it was Ricardo Quaresma’s turn to run riot down the right, with the on-loan Inter Milan winger having his best performance to date in a Blues’ shirt. Despite it being lower league opposition, Quaresma’s performance was far more mature than usual, as the Portuguese star looked to do the simple things well, delivering numerous crosses into the danger area and clinically teeing up Alex for Chelsea’s killer second.
After such a shift it is unsurprising to read today that Chelsea are looking to sign the winger on a permanent basis from Inter this summer, with Florent Malouda set to be sold off to help fund the transfer.
