What a player, what a performance.
With a seemingly magnetic left foot, Leo Messi once again put in a world class shift for Barcelona midweek, proving himself to be one of the key reasons the Catalans overturned a 1-nil deficit to end up beating Bilbao, and raising the Copa Del Rey trophy, 4-1.
Save for the opener, Messi had a hand in all the three remaining Barca goals. The 21-year-old Argentine scored the second goal himself. Picking up the ball in the centre of the park, Messi was the architect of Bojan Krkic’s strike that opened up a 2-goal cushion for Barca, while Messi was also responsible for winning the foul from which Xavi Hernandez netted the fourth from a free-kick.
Yet, as always, Messi’s performance was far more than just about his contributions to goalscoring opportunities. Finding himself playing in a far more central role than usual, particularly in the second half, Messi kept popping up in the difficult-to-defend hole between the midfield and attack, with his sharp movements and perfect one-touch control on full view for everyone to enjoy.
