If anybody thinks that England will roll over the United States at the World Cup, then we’d advise you to review the highlights reel of Hull striker Jozy Altidore against Manchester City from Saturday.
Having started life at the New York Red Bulls with a lethal partnership with former Aston Villa striker Juan Pablo Angel, Altidore has since slowly come to the fore in Europe after spending a season at Villarreal in Spain before joining the Tigers at the start of the season.
Altidore progress in England has been generally ignored, but against the Citizens he proved that his game is improving week on week as the burly, athletic forward bruised his way through the visitors’ defence time after time. Altidore made his presence felt as early as the fourth minute when his run on goal was interrupted grotesquely by Kolo Toure, who was shown a yellow card. In the 20th minute, the powerful American was taken down again when charging towards the penalty area and this time it was Dedryck Boyata who picked up a booking.
Altidore then proved his goal-threat when fired Hull into the lead after being teed up by Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink.
