So good was Gareth Bale against Newcastle on Saturday, that all and sundry, not just Andre Villas-Boas, were describing the Welshman’s influence on Tottenham as comparable to Lionel Messi for Barcelona.
Arsenal fans have taken a slightly different view, resorting to call their north London rivals “Bale United” and Tottenham’s recent reliance on their Welsh flyer has been pretty incredible.
To find the last player to score for Tottenham that wasn’t Gareth Bale or Clint Dempsey you have to go back to January 1, 2013 and Emmanuel Adebayor against Reading.
Bale has scored Spurs’ last four goals and on a personal note has five goals in his last four matches for club and country.
Leaving their reliance aside as well as the oft-mentioned move away from White Hart Lane in the summer, Bale has been unplayable in recent weeks and was terrific against Newcastle.
After starting the game on the left, a second half positional change to the centre saw him involved in far more clear cut chances and, as the Spurs star admitted afterwards, Bale really should have claimed a hat-trick.
