Hoffenheim maintain 100% record; Bayern continue to falter at Dortmund; Werder & Schalke share spoils

Borussia Dortmund 1 – Bayern Munich 1 (Bundesliga, August 23, 2008) (Longer highlights here.) Bayern’s tough start to the season continued at Dortmund, Kuba Blaszczykowski firing a cracker with the outside of his right boot to put the hosts ahead. And it got worse for Klinsmann’s side when Mark van Bommel picked up two yellow cards in the 20th and 23rd minutes. On the half-time whistle Bayern had to resort to some last ditch defending to prevent Valdez adding a second. In the second half Schweinsteiger fluffed a great opportunity to pull Bayern level. But the champions eventually did score thanks to new signing Tim Borowski, who broke his duck turning home a loose ball from a corner.

Stuttgart 0 – Bayer Leverkusen 2 (Bundesliga, August 23, 2008) (Longer highlights here.) Jens Lehmann allowed a shot from Patrick Helmes to slither through under his body before Fanis Gekas sealed the win in the 79th.

Hoffenheim 1 – Monchengladbach 0 (Bundesliga, August 23, 2008) The fairy-tale story of Hoffenheim, the village team, received another boost as they won thanks to a 31st minute goal from Ibisevic.

Hertha Berlin 1 – Arminia Bielefeld 1 (Bundesliga, August 23, 2008) (Longer highlights here.) Hertha led against Arminia with a goal by Marko Pantelic, Artur Wichniarek capitalised on a mistake to get the equaliser.

Werder Bremen 1 – Schalke 1 (Bundesliga, August 23, 2008) (Longer highlights here.) The Royal Blues trailed to Mesut Ozil’s 63rd-minute opener but Westermann pounced with just four minutes to go to earn Schalke a draw they scarcely deserved.

Hamburg 2 – Karlsruhe 1 (Bundesliga, August 23, 2008) (Longer highlights here.) Tim Sebastian had put through his own net to give Hamburg the lead. Sebastian Freis equalised for Karlsruhe putting the ball between the keeper’s legs. New signing Mladen Petric headed the ball down into the path of Joris Mathijsen to score the winner in injury time.
