Bolton’s reserves registered a fabulous result on Monday night edging Liverpool’s second string 4-3 in a thrilling match on Merseyside.
Liverpool took an early lead when Jay Spearing sprung the offside trap to latch onto Mikel San Jose’s fine pass and calmly roll past the keeper. Wanderers were soon back level, Ariza Makukula levelled seven minutes later with a powerful run and finish from the Portuguese striker. Back came the Reds, Spearing restoring the hosts’ advantage when he exchanged passes with Dani Pacheco to drill home a low shot, only for Bolton to again draw level before the break as Israeli international Tamir Cohen equalised with a header from a corner minutes before the break. The scoring was not over though, Spearing put Liverpool 3-2 up from the penalty spot a minute before the interval after Sebastien Puygrenier was adjudged to have fouled Krisztian Nemeth in the area.

Liverpool held their lead until the 68th minute when Ariza Makukula bundled the ball over the line after seeing an acrobatic overhead-kick rebound back off the bar. And just before the final whistle a miscommunication in the Reds defence between Antwi and keeper Hansen allowed Makukula to nip in and coolly net his hat-trick goal and the match-winner.
