Hapoel Tel Aviv win the Israeli league in the 92nd minute of the final game

There was high drama in the Israeli Ligat Ha’al yesterday evening as Hapoel Tel Aviv snatched the title in the 92nd minute of their match at Betar Jerusalem. There has been a lot of criticism aimed at the new play-off system used in the top division of the only democracy in the Middle East – but fans were left glued to the action right up until the final whistle.

Hapoel came into the match two points behind former champions Maccabi Haifa who were expected to win their match at Bnei Yehuda. The greens from the north surprisingly failed to capture all three points and could only draw 1-1.

This left the door open for Hapoel to complete the double but they looked to have blown their chance when going into extra time they were also locked in a 1-1 draw with Betar. Intense pressure from Eli Guttman’s side eventually saw Eran Zehavi side foot home the winner and secure the league in the 92nd minute of the final match of the season.
