USA 1 – Japan 0 (Women’s Olympics, August 9, 2008) The Americans created a host of scoring opportunities, but were only able to capitalise in the 27th minute, when Carli Lloyd rifled a half volley into the roof of the net from a cross from Stephanie Cox.

Nigeria 0 – Germany 1 (Women’s Olympics, August 9, 2008) Kerstin Stegemann scored a second-half winner, striking a first-time shot from close range after a well-placed cross from substitute Anja Mittag.

Brazil 2 – North Korea 1 (Women’s Olympics, August 9, 2008) Brazil went ahead in the 14th minute when a shambles in the North Korea defence allowed Daniela who scored into an empty net. Nine minutes later, Marta beat her hesitant marker to the ball and scored on the turn. Ri Kum Suk scored North Korea’s consolation in injury-time.
