Goalkeeping heroics: Sinan Bolat saves Standard Liege’s title hopes with last minute penalty save

Due to the nature of 101 Great Goals, it is somewhat rare that we feature goalkeepers. Goals are the bread and butter of this site and keepers barely get a look in.

This morning though, Standard Liege keeper Sinan Bolat has etched his name into Belgian football folklore with a dramatic intervention to send the Belgian title into a two-legged play-off.

Both Anderlecht and Standard Liege needed to win yesterday and with Anderlecht comfortably winning 2-0 at Genk, Standard were living dangerously at only 1-0 up away at Gent.

A whole season’s work looked to be going down the pan when, in stoppage time, Oguchi Onyewu fouled Milos Maric in the box.

Up stepped Bryan Ruiz and in true Roy of the Rovers style Bolat saved Standard and ensured a two-legged play-off on May 21 and May 24 to decide the destination of the Belgian title.
