German tosser: Werder’s Frank Baumann is hit by battery

The German Football Association (DFB) has opened an investigation after Werder Bremen captain Frank Baumann was hit by a mobile phone battery thrown from the crowd during his side’s defeat away to Hamburg last weekend in the Bundesliga.

This incident occurred during the celebrations for Diego’s equalising free-kick. After the Brazilian curled his set-play into the net, the number 10 immediately ran to the nearest corner to celebrate, despite the fact that the corner in question was housing a major section of home fans. Presumably taking issue with the scenes unfolding below them, a Hamburg fan was then guilty of assaulting Frank Baumann by striking the footballer on his left cheekbone with a mobile phone battery.

On impact, Baumann immediately hit the floor in agony, with his fellow Werder teammates handing the missile to the match official as well as remonstrating with the crowd for the act of violence.

Hamburg have since issued an apology, saying “We can only apologise in the name of HSV. Something like that should of course not happen regardless of emotions. We will use every means available to identify the perpetrator.”

Incredibly, the episode ended with the ref showing Baumann a yellow card for his troubles.

This eye-witness footage captured the whole event unfold.
