RB Leipzig manager Ralph Rangnick has today told some interesting stories to Sport Bild, which involve a Liverpool defender and Leicester striker Jamie Vardy.
According to Rangnick, he had the opportunity to sign Vardy two years ago but he passed up the opportunity to land the Englishman.
Why? Because the German coach deemed that Vardy was too old for his club.
At the same time, Leipzig wanted to sign Joe Gomez, however the defender eventually went to Liverpool instead.
Ralph Rangnick’s quotes to Bild were as follows:
We desperately wanted to sign Joe Gomez, who later chose Liverpool, and we were flying back from London to Leipzig with his agent.
In the plane, the agent said to me ‘Mr Rangnick, it’s a crying shame that you are so radical about who you sign and only go for players who are under 24 because I’ve got somebody who would be just perfect for you.
I can guarantee he would become a national team player under you, but he’s already 27 and he’s also spent time in prison after a little fight.’
It was Jamie Vardy… (but I said) ‘No, he’s 27 – we’re not doing it.’
Vardy has 22 goals in the Premier League this season.
RB Leipzig, meanwhile, are second in the German second division.
