Manchester City v Manchester United, Premier League, April 30, 2012
City 6/5; Draw 12/5; United 9/4 - Bet on the Manic Monday Manchester derby here.
It has been billed as the “biggest Premier League match ever” and the most important Manchester derby since United were (kind of) relegated at Old Trafford by a Denis Law back heel in 1974.
For once the hyperbole doesn’t do it justice, such is the race for the Premier League title, which has produced an almost once-in-a-lifetime match to decide the 2011/2012 title, as the “noisy neighbours” look to upset the perennial champions.
Here, as Rafa Benitez would say, are the facts. Manchester City trail their great local rivals by three points having made great strides over recent seasons to challenge at the top of the table following decades of underachievement.
A win on Monday night puts City in the driving seat, since they go into the Etihad clash with a +6 goal difference. Their remaining games are Newcastle (a) and QPR (h).
Manchester United meanwhile, have just escaped to Wales, to avoid the pressure of the “unmissable title showdown” and know that a draw puts them in the driving seat whilst a victory all but secures the title on enemy territory. Sir Alex Ferguson’s side still have to play Swansea (h) and Sunderland (a).
City go into the match as 6/5 favourites, with a 2-1 win for Roberto Mancini’s side 15/2 with Bet365. A punt on United, to win 2-1 is currently at 11/1 whilst odds of 28/1 are available on the home team to be winning at half-time with United storming back for all three points at full-time.
So, what do the boffins (jokers) at 101 Great Goals think, you are probably (maybe) wondering.
Carlos Tevez is guaranteed to score. The Argentina has looked in fine fettle over recent weeks, will be desperate to get another one over Ferguson and co. and is unlikely to be taken in by the pre-match hype.
Moreover, Tevez appears to be dovetailing superbly with Sergio Ageuro, whilst many will fancy City’s midfield to take control against Carrick and Scholes in the middle of the park.
The fact both sides have recorded significant victories on each other’s turf this season means both will go for it but City have the momentum and United’s defence looked brittle against Everton last week.
101gg predicts: Carlos Tevez to score first & Manchester City to win 3-1: 70/1 with the good folk at Bet365.
