A Brazilian referee has filed an assault charge with the police following an incident that arose from the non-award of a penalty.
Low down in the football food chain in the 9th tier of the Brazilian league (otherwise known as the Campeonato Amazonense), the match between Nacional and Fast Clube turned into a farce during injury time on Wednesday.
Trailing 1-nil, Fast Clube piled on the pressure in search of a last gasp equaliser, and they thought they’d won a penalty when the ball struck the arm of an Nacional defender yards off his goalline. But rather than pointing to the spot, match official Djalma de Souza waved the vocal appeals aside as he blew his whistle for full-time.
Feeling collectively robbed by the non-decision, three players immediately raced to the referee to demands answers. Fast Clube goalie Naylson, however, stormed into the fray a little too aggressively, and the man in black (or yellow, to be precise) was sent hurtling to the grass.
Once grounded the Fast players moved in like a pack of wolves.
Teaming over the official, who was left looking like a little boy on the naughty step, nine Fast players swarmed over de Souza before the official finally got to his feet.
Military police then stepped to bring order to the chaos.
