The day after we brought you the story of the wossie Belgium linesman who was injured after being hit but a piece of cardboard, a far more sinister story has emerged from Costa Rica.
During the latest round of matches Deportivo Saprissa triumphed 2-1 away at Alajuelense, however the post match celebrations were cut short when stalwart defender Douglas Sequeira was struck in the neck by a stone.
The incident was captured by an eye-witness.
After the final whistle had blown, 34-year-old Sequeira (41 international caps) went over to the corner flag to celebrate with the travelling Saprissa fans. After kissing the club badge and jeering up the crowd, Sequeira stopped his cheerleading antics and starting heading back towards his teammates.
Sadly, before he could get too far away from the corner, a precision throw from a rogue fan saw a stone hit the centre-half on the side of his throat and Sequeira immediately fell to the floor in agony.
Local reports claimed that Sequeira momentarily stopped breathing before medical attention was called. The player received ventilation and was removed on a stretcher into the clubhouse.
