Last weekend in Israel, former Wycombe, Aston Villa, Derby and QPR boss John Gregory watched his current side Maccabi Ahi Nazareth pull the rabbit out the hat with an incredible 95th minute equaliser from goalie Joslain Mayebi.
Fighting for their top flight lives in the Israeli Ligat ha’Al, the Nazareth based side found themselves 2-1 down to fellow relegation-strugglers Hapoel Haifa at the weekend when they had one last chance to hurl the ball into the mixer from a set-play.
It wasn’t pretty, but after the free-kick was poorly dealt with by Hapoel, 23-year-old Cameroonian keeper Mayebi found the ball dropped at his feet. And not needing a second invitation, Mayebi reacted quickly and decisively as he powered the ball into the net.
Making the moment all the more sweeter for fans of British football was the sight of John Gregory – chavved out in a Diadora tracksuit, with a sparkling gold watch and his trademark slicked-back hair to boot – blowing a kiss into the camera after the dramatic goal was scored.
