Even in 2011, British players abroad is a rare thing. Ian Rush’s quote on his transfer from Liverpool to Juventus strangely still seems to apply: “Moving from Wales to Italy is like moving to a different country.”
So, the story of Kenny Pavey in Sweden should be an inspiring one and kudos to the excellent Football Ramble for pinpointing the fact that he is somewhat of a cult hero at AIK Stockholm.
After tasting the high life at Millwall and Sittingbourne, Pavey moved to Swedish second division side Ljungskile SK in 1998 before a transfer to AIK seven years later.
Pavey has turned into a cult hero on the AIK terraces thanks to his English playing style and his role in the league and cup double in 2009.
The 31-year-old winger (sometime full back) was the hero on Monday night again for AIK as he fired home the only goal in a 1-0 win over Orebro in the Allsvenskan. (It should be noted that following the match, Paveyu gave an interview in Swedish.)
Brilliantly, the AIK fans were able to serenade Pavey with a quality terrace chant in English. Lyrics here:
“Oh Kenny Pavey! You are the love of my life! Oh Kenny Pavey! I’ll let you shag my wife! Oh Kenny Pavey! You’re the one for me!”
