The Spanish media is today reporting that Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo refused a 10-year-old girl an autograph because she was wearing a Barcelona shirt.
The story has been reported in both El Mundo Deportivo and Sport, after Portuguese paper Record received the following letter from a disappointed father.
The letter read as follows:
I wish I could look into the eyes and tell Cristiano Ronaldo he has lost a fan, however insignificant it may seem.
I will explain what happened.
Today my 10 year old daughter usually has soccer practice, but it was cancelled because the Portugal national team was preparing [for Euro 2012] at the same training facilities. Accordingly we took the opportunity to see the football idols up close and personal.
Unfortunately my happy and fun daughter was left sad and dejected. When I asked her what was wrong just shrugged and said, ‘Cristiano did not want to sign me an autograph because I was wearing the Barcelona shirt.’
I did not know what to say. The shirt was bought a souvenir on a trip to Barcelona. If the trip had been to Madrid, we would have got her a Real jersey.
It was painful to see the disappointment in the eyes of my daughter. It was hard to explain to a 10 year old, who had spent the past two weeks getting excited about seeing her idol, why she had been shunned.
I needed to tell this story, so thank you very much for listening.”
