In news that surprised absolutely no-one, Cristiano Ronaldo last night won the Fifa World Player of the Year for 2008 at a glitzy affair in Zurich.
Accepting his award from Pele, the Manchester United winger gushed as he completed a clean sweep of the major individual awards, having already won the Football Writersâ€™ Player of the Year award, the PFA Player of the Year award, the Golden Boot, the Ballon dâ€™Or and the FifPro World Player of the Year award.
Ronaldo: “It is an overwhelming moment for me, a very special moment. I would like to say to my mother and my sister: you can set off the fireworks now. I want to thank my friends, my family and my team-mates. This is one of the most important moments in my life. I hope I can come back.”
