Cristiano Ronaldo blames Gonzalo Higuain for Real Madrid’s Champions League exit

The fallout from Real Madrid’s Champions League exit to Lyon continues.

Whilst the future of Manuel Pellegrini has been focusing minds in the English press – Jose Mourinho, Rafa Benitez and Arsene Wenger have all been linked with the Bernabeu hotseat. The Spanish media have questioned the role of some of the “Galacticos” including Kaka and Argentinean striker Gonzalo Higuain.

Influential newspaper Marca has devoted its front page today (see bottom right) to the dispute between Cristiano Ronaldo and Gonzalo Higuain. CR9, no stranger to a bit of individualism himself, has shifted the blame on to the Argentinean striker.

The incident in question came just before the half hour on Wednesday night, with Real Madrid 1-0 up, Higuain chose to strike on goal rather than pass to the open Ronaldo. This incident has been replayed over and over again and can be seen from various angles on this video.

The race to be top scorer in the Spanish league (“Pichichi”) has been placed as a reason for this spat between Ronaldo and Higuain. A theme added to by quotes from Guti who said after the game: “We should have been more of a team instead of being individualistic.” A full report on this angle, in Spanish, can be seen here.

This author, for one, finds it incredible that Higuain’s shocking/unlucky miss in the first half hasn’t been the centre of attention. Either way Higuain looks like the fall guy, which if the form of Nicklas Bendtner over the past week is anything to go by, back the former River Plate striker to score a hat-trick at Valladolid on Sunday.
