Saturday was an unmitigated disaster for Cologne, no longer a Bundesliga club and their fans took relegation particularly badly.
Going into the final round of games, Cologne were one point ahead of Hertha Berlin and looked the likleier to secure a relegation play-off spot against a Bundesliga II side.
A 4-1 home defeat to Bayern Munich coupled with Hertha’s 3-1 victory over Hoffenheim means Cologne will be playing in the German second division next season and their fans responded by setting fire to the RheinEnergieStadion.
Smoke bombs rained down on the pitch, even before the final whistle and the inevitable angry pitch invasion also ensued once the referee blew for full time early with riot police coming on the pitch to calm down the situation.
Star striker Lukas Podolski, Arsenal bound, was the last player off the pitch to compound the misery for the Cologne supporters.
