Despite their numerous midfielders, Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho obviously feels they lack quality in the centre of the park.
For that reason, he is looking to strength in January, according to respected Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio.
Inter’s Freddy Guarin heads the shortlist but former Chelsea youngster Nemanja Matic has been lined up too, in case Guarin is unattainable.
Benfica’s Matic is expected to cost upward of £30m, with the central midfielder also heavily linked to Manchester City and PSG.
City have reportedly already offered Javi Garcia plus cash to sign Matic, but Benfica were uninterested by their offer.
